John Legend is a whore. (Music 6 months in)

C’mon dude. Lexus, Target and JC Penney commercials?

Anyway, here are my favorite albums of the year so far, in alphabetical order.

1. Cut Copy – In Ghost Colours: What a weird mix of indie rock, techno, new wave, etc. Not one song quite sounds like the last. Somehow it works.
2. Fleet Foxes – S/t: Will go down as the most gorgeous album of the year. It fills my heart every time I listen to it. A masterpiece.
3. Hercules & Love Affair – S/t: The DFA astonish me every year. Modern disco at its finest. Sexy. Endlessly inventive. Antony on his own albums is a bit grating, but as a disco siren he’s great.
4. Ladytron – Velocifero: They didn’t top Witching Hour, their last album, but still a strong set of songs on a more gothic industrial bent.
5. Los Campesinos! – Hold On Now, Youngster: British indie pop fun from start to finish. Seems to throw every instrument into the mix at breakneck speed but somehow never sounds cluttered.
6. Neon Neon – “Stainless Style”: Modern 80’s music. What fun. Finally someone gets it right.
7. Portishead – Third: It’s easy to be disappointed when you’ve been waiting 11 years for a new album by one of your favorite groups. Instead Portishead created their third classic album.
8. Robyn – S/t: Every song is a hit single. Between the sass of the pop hiphop song “Konichiwa Bitches” or the raw emotion of the trance ballad “With Every Heartbeat”, once again I am scratching my head as to why it takes a Swede do make great pop music and Americans are stuck with shit like Britney or Katy Perry.
9. Santogold – S/t: Easily can be compared to M.I.A. and Lily Allen, both of whom she’s friendly with apparently, but doesn’t make the album any less good. Good music is good music, no matter how much it reminds you of other artists. Great album to drive to.
10. She & Him – Volume One: Zooey Deschanel should give up on acting and just sing. That’s how good her voice is. What an easy album to like.

Special mention:
Girl Talk – Feed The Animals: Really it’s Night Ripper Pt. 2. Some of the novelty is gone, but still a great time. He cuts up the songs a bit more this time around, I think more craft went into the album. Favorite moment is “Boyz” by M.I.A. and “Dreams” by The Cranberries mashed.

Biggest disappointment:
My Morning Jacket – Evil Urges: Already discussed it. “Touch Me I’m Going To Scream Pt 2.” will be one of my favorite songs of the year though.

I’m not including The Raveonettes “Lust Lust Lust” album since I put it on my top 15 for 2007.

I’m 100% in support of this.

Cool as shit.

Some random thoughts.

I just realized the two songs I’ve been listening to most lately are “Hug My Soul” by Saint Etienne and “Find My Soul” by Sally Shapiro.

Juno was a good movie and I had no problem with it. Nothing I wanted to change. But, I didn’t feel passionate for it either. But I just watched Enchanted, the Disney movie with Amy Adams, and I adored it.

I’m happy Jon Stewart is giving Obama just as much a hard time as anyone else. I support Obama, but I also support lack of bias.

I would argue Chuck Palahniuk is in some way a (very modern) poet.

I think it’s terrible that people accuse Britney Spears, Kim Kardashian, Lily Allen, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Mandy Moore, etc of being fat. There’s nothing wrong or unattractive with a girl having a little weight. I wonder how non-famous girls feel reading this shit. There’s a big (no pun intended) difference between a 5′ 6″ girl weighing 150 versus 200.

George Carlin just fucking died.

I grew up on George Carlin. My father is a massive fan of his, as am I. If you listen to any comedian today, they will list him amongst a small group of comedians (Lenny Bruce, Richard Pryor, etc.) as being the most important influences on comedy. If you listen to his 1972 “Class Clown” album he does a bit called “Muhammad Ali – America The Beautiful”. If I didn’t tell you when it was recorded, you’d think he was talking about the Iraq War. He was talking about Vietnam. I dunno… I am shocked and saddened by this. Here is his famous “7 Words You Can Never Say On Television” Coincidentally, at the beginning you see this was recorded in Phoenix in 1978, the year I was born.

Evil Urges

The new My Morning Jacket album is quite a shock. It’s… I’m not sure I like it much. I spent the first half of the album looking at the CD player in puzzlement, and spent the second half relieved some of the album is great. “Highly Suspicious” will easily go down as their worst song ever. Cringeworthy singing, awful lyrics, and stilted funk. The world only needs one Ween, thanks. Clearly they wanted to experiment, and I always applaud that. The techno break in the middle of “Run Thru” from the It Still Moves album was exciting. The complex drum structure of “It Beats 4 U” from Z was a great leap forward (which they reuse here in “Touch Me I’m Going To Scream Pt. 1”). But, Jim James, who has one of the best voices in rock, needs to quit his weird 70s disco/funk Prince falsetto fetish. The first song I had heard from Evil Urges was “Touch Me I’m Going To Scream Pt. 2”, and Jim James’ vocals and the driving rhythm is by far the highlight of the album. It sounds finally like what they were reaching for the whole album. The title track, which starts the album promisingly, has a bit of funk/reggae they introduced on Z. But, the whole midsection, starting with “I’m Amazed” is boring, safe AOR, pretty and pretty vacant if you ask me (just look at that song title). Starting with the weird, yet pretty string-laden “Librarian”, the album goes back into more familiar artistic territory, and the rest of the album sounds more like My Morning Jacket. They’ve had 4 fantastic albums, each progressively more interesting and artistic than the last. I guess they do have the cache to fuck around a bit. I just wish the results were better.

I Kissed A Girl

It’s a cute song, I guess. It’s, uh, nice all the teenage girls who make out with each other to get attention from boys have an anthem now. If Katy Perry had any balls she’d make a video that looks like this. Warning: Explicit. Very explicit.

My Spoon Is Too Big

This is completely up my alley. My very dark alley.

Lily Allen

There is so much awesomeness in this picture I had to post it. She’s adorable.

The two new songs on Lily’s Myspace page are really good too.
