The Phenomenal Handclap Band

This is my current favorite song.

They’re a New York band centered around two producers who collect 28 musicians from the N.Y. indie dance and soul scene into a supergroup. The members are from such groups as TV On The Radio, Calla, Mooney Suzuki, !!!, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Si Se, The Dap Kings (Amy Winehouse’s band), etc. If you like David Holmes, !!!, The Rapture, The DFA, etc. you should love this band. Apparently they’re unsigned, and other than a SXSW sampler on iTunes and Amazon, they’re unreleased.

Check out three other songs here on their Myspace.

Thanks to All Songs Considered, specifically Sleater-Kinney’s Carrie Brownstein, for exposing me to this band.

On a related note, I think the 00’s should be remembered as the decade that legitimized Disco.

Detached Bite-sized Yippety-yap.

I do not get Twitter. I will never get Twitter. I think Facebook status updates are enough. Once, when I thought of the fact that Lily Allen, P. Diddy, Kanye West, John Hodgman, etc use Twitter, I briefly thought of joining. Then I realized I don’t give a fuck what inane crap they have to say every hour of every day either. No offense.

Though I am down with Ashton Kutcher posting photos of Demi Moore’s bent over bikini-clad ass.

Christina Ricci broke my heart today.

According to The Superficial, Christina Ricci got engaged to this giant duffus. Doesn’t she know she’s supposed to save herself for that chance time we cross paths and she falls in love with me? I’ve loved her since Addams Family. I’m 30 and she’s 29, so that’s not as creepy as it first sounds. I’ve seen all but five or so of her movies, and those she had small parts in. She’s talented, intelligent, has dark childhood issues, and is exactly my type. I’m going to beat this guy up. All Owen Benjamin has done is been on Punk’d and had a role in The House Bunny. I had to look up his damned Wikipedia page. At least when she was with Adam Goldberg she was with someone who was talented and had unconventional looks. I hate Owen Benjamin!

Bat For Lashes – What’s A Girl To Do?

I love this video. It’s one of a few I’ve actually bought off of iTunes. I’m really excited for the new album, can’t you tell? I didn’t even mention in the last blog entry that Scott Walker guests on a track!

Jon Stewart vs Jim Cramer. Who’s really the comedian?

I have three heroes. Jon Stewart is one of them (my myspace lists the other two). I’ve watched him since the MTV show. I’ve watched him go from a very funny comedian to one of the most outspoken, intelligent, and respected news commentator/interviewers we have. And, people continue to dismiss him as just a “comedian”. Jim Cramer made that mistake. Jim Cramer got his ass shoved down his mouth. Jon Stewart is us. A regular guy who wants answers. That is why he’s my hero. He says the things I wish I could say on TV, often to the people I wish I could say them to.

I’m not going to embed every part of the interview. This is the intro. Here is the link to the site.

It’s Blitz!

The new Yeah Yeah Yeahs album It’s Blitz! was released digitally this week, much earlier than the original April 14th release date because the album leaked to the internet a couple weeks ago. Not able to resist anything new by the YYYs, I ahem… happened upon it and have been pretty much going between it and the new Neko Case since. I bought the official release, and other than the moral obligation to give artists your money, the extra tracks are completely worth it.

The advance word on the album is that It’s Blitz! would be the YYYs + synth album, and also their “love” album. It is both those things in the best way possible. When it comes to velocity, nothing else on the album compares to the disco punk glitter ball of the first single “Zero”. The pulsing synth line mixed with Nick Zinner’s guitar is pretty enthralling. “Heads Will Roll” might be the least cheesy new wave throwback ever. This is because the synth lines and melody are so genuine. But, the rest of the album is quieter and more subtle. Songs like “Hysteric” are actually gorgeous, genuine synth-pop love songs. “Skeltons” takes the synths and makes them a quiet bed for Karen to sing over. “Little Shadow” starts with a quiet organ and acoustic guitar. Marshall style drums come in and build, adding emotional weight to an already affecting song, which finally ends in Karen wordless hum. During “Dull Life”, Nick Zinner makes his guitar playing as plaintive as “Maps”. They also change the funk up a little during “Dragon Queen”, which is a slinky 70’s literal callback to Iggy Pop’s “Nightclubbing”. Karen O largely puts away her singing tics and simply sings. And, she sounds lovely throughout. It’s no surprise really that a singer who can mew and huff and yelp like she did on Fever To Tell has a real voice behind it. I think it’s Karen O’s unmistakable charisma that makes this a distinctly Yeah Yeah Yeahs album. And, the impeccable quality of the songwriting. If you think what I say is hyperbolic bullshit, check out the four bonus acoustic versions at the end of the album. they should really be called “string versions”, because in addition to acoustic guitars, the songs have been arranged for strings. They’re gorgeous. I might actually prefer the acoustic version of “Soft Shock” to the original. This album is another step forward. Adding synths and love songs only added colors to an already colorful band. It’s clear this is a band that will kick your fucking ass, get you on the dancefloor, tug at your heart, and do it all with a rare artistic quality.

Great album cover too:

Bat For Lashes pushes all my buttons.

Bat For Lashes, aka Natasha Khan, is going to release her second album Two Suns on April 6th. I’m highly looking forward to it, as her first album was on my Top 15 for 2007. She follows in the witchy kooky ridiculously talented tradition of Tori Amos and Kate Bush. This promo video for the new album is ever so artistically pretentious flowiness and femininity, and I love it. So far, the first three songs we’ve gotten to hear, “Daniel”, “Sleep Alone and “Glass” are exactly what I want from her second album. Her, but with new elements. “Daniel” has a nice Eurythmics feel, in my opinion. “Sleep Alone” drops a head nodding groove into the mix. Plus, look at these gorgeous covers.

And OK, so what if she’s more than a little:

There are much worse things to be.

Basic Cable Personality Clash Skirmish ’09

Jon Stewart wants to clarify something.

The blogosphere, which I am a very tiny part of, apparently all assumed the CNBC hatchet job the Daily Show did was due to one of the CNBC members canceling a Daily Show appearance. Last night, Jon Stewart clarified that was not their reason. They had prepared their segment with the intention of airing it if the CNBC guy showed up. And, thinking back, especially when they had Bush people on, they’re more than happy to make interviews uncomfortable with their segments. So, after making this correction, what did Stewart do? Further rip CNBC a bigger asshole. Hilarious.
