About This Blog

This is a blog dedicated to my thoughts about music and other aspects of popular culture. It is not meant to be a professional blog, and often it is written in very personal terms. But, there will be little to no entries about my personal life. I have a blog for that.

Music is the closest thing I have to a religion. It’s what I turn to when I am happy or when I am depressed. It is always there for you, and it always will be there for you. Music doesn’t care if you discovered it before anyone else did, only that you have discovered it. I relate to everything, including other forms of art, through the terms of music. The title of my blog is inspired by this SNL skit. Music is everything. Leave it to Bjork, even in parody, to inspire depth of meaning.

I want to make two things clear: I do not profess to be a great writer. I also no longer attempt to be “ahead of the curve” when it comes to the latest hipster band. I gave up that ghost a long time ago. I’m 30 years old, and I don’t have the time or disposable income that would take. Plus, I live in Phoenix, and bands rarely come here. I consider myself a recovering music snob. I’ve learned over the years that all being a music snob does is hurt people, or at the very least make you annoying. But, like a recovering addict, there are bands that get a rise out of me. Linkin Park is a classic example. Really, I’m just a music geek.

Here are some things you may want to know about me when it comes to music:

Automatic For The People by R.E.M. is my favorite album. It has been a mirror for what I feel like inside since it first came out.

Vespertine by Bjork is the aural equivalent to what I think love is. My favorite singer is Bjork, and has been since Debut.

“How Soon Is Now?” by The Smiths is my favorite song, the closest I’ve ever had to a theme song.

Get Ready by 2Unlimited was the first album I ever bought on my own. It was 1991, and I was 13. Rave music was my first love. Before then, I liked 80s music, The Beatles, Talking Heads, and Donna Summer.

My favorite band changes, but usually it’s Belle And Sebastian. They make music so beautiful and moving, it seems almost against nature. When I was an angry teenager it was Metallica. When I was a depressed, disaffected teenager  (and after Metallica sold out), it was Radiohead.

Anyway, my goal in writing this blog is to hopefully turn people on to something they haven’t heard before. It’s a forum to express my views, and you may not agree with them. Feel free to comment and argue with me. Please keep in mind that any music or movie list you see is a snapshot in time.

If you read any of it, thank you.

  1. Very nice writing, even if you don’t think you’re a “professional” writer, who cares right? I admire your honest “candor”, in this “about me.”. . .

You have your music, and I have my books. We judge books by their covers, but they never do unto us. Nice exchange. . .
